Nearly 4 weeks old...

Puppy Update!

~Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season~

The puppies keep getting bigger and bigger, but they are still sleepy little babies. They've had their first taste of playing outside the whelping box this week, but those pictures are just too blurry! We had to wait for them to tucker out to get some nice pictures. We put up the tree and wrapped gifts today so we decided to mark the puppies with coloured ribbon.
Gold - our biggest male,
Green - our middle male,
Silver - our littlest male,
Red - our darker female,
No ribbon - our brighter female.
In terms of personality, our bright female and the littlest male are both the most playful and energetic so far, while the darker female and the two bigger boys are more relaxed and love to cuddle.

Almost Week 3 - All Eyes Open

It's time for a quick update...
Earlier this week all of the puppies eyes opened, beautiful and big like mom's, and as of this morning they've started to waddle around. During our little photo shoot this afternoon, we got a small glimpse into their emerging personalities.

The 1st female, with her bright points might be an energetic little one. She only held still for her pictures when she was asleep with mom and litter mates. Otherwise, she was always on the move and enjoyed giving Andrea's thumb a little toothless nibble.

The 2nd female, with her long lovely body was the calmest of the bunch. She slowly, but curiously explored her surroundings, taking her time to sniff, and stretch out. We had some great pics in no time flat, the co-operation was much appreciated!

~The Boys~

The 1st boy is a cuddly one for sure and medium in size. Every time we set him down on the blanket, he made a quick and noisy bee line back to us. We eventually gave in to his demands and settled on some cuddly pictures of him with Ashley, but not before we got 2 great shots with him and a TY turkey!

The 2nd male is our biggest boy in the bunch! He so far seems like he has more of an independent nature, but turns to butter when we pick him up for some cuddling. We often find him at the bottom of the puppy pile, a possible future blanket burrower? A common dachshund trait :).

The 3rd male is our wee little guy, even smaller than our ladies by a hair :). He was spunky and curious, but paused whenever we gave his chin a scratch. He already reminds us of our little Hank with his curious, energetic, and fun loving personality.

1.5 Week Old Beauties!

Our healthy puppies are growing like weeds and have already by far doubled their size :). As we anticipated, the puppies cream highlights are starting to brighten up. We'd like to formally congratulate April and Sean, Cara and family, Adrienne and Rick, and Katerina and family on their new beautiful puppies.

A photographers dream, we captured some extra adorableness from one of our females.

Here's a glimpse of our three lovely boys...

And of course the whole litter, Isabella is doing great!

A cute story... our special boy Leo simply loves puppies! He follows us everywhere and gently barks to see them. As soon as he's close enough, he showers them with kisses. It was hard to get our pictures this morning, his nose was in so many. Uncle Leo :)!!

After a long wait... We Have Puppies!

It's been two years since Isabella's first litter, but we're finally ready for another. Isabella was studded with Kona, a beautiful black and cream male from Classic Dachshunds Kennel. See their respective pages for more details.

This time around Isabell knew the drill, but we could tell this would be a bigger litter than the last. She smoothly delivered five beautiful plump pups on the evening of Nov 24th. Isabell was a pro through the whole process and delivered all five puppies within two hours. Mom and babies are resting and relaxing, each puppy looks perfect. Here is the story of their birth.

From the whelping box....
A week in advance of Isabella's due date we hauled out the whelping box. We were sure she would start nesting, but instead she jumped out, it was clear she wasn't ready to commit. Her Sunday due date came and went, but not without another little surprise, a snow storm with two feet of snow.
By that evening, the power was out and I was struck with the flu, but despite all, our awesome wood-stove kept everyone warm and toasty.
Monday, flu, no power, no puppies. Tuesday, flu, no power, no puppies, until that evening, and just when the lights came back on, Isabell decided it was time!  She finally committed to her whelping box in a quiet bedroom. She did amazingly well, every pup perfect and it was all over in 2 hours.
The power was back on, the flu was passing, and we all celebrated.
